The
Jewish Radio Mafia: Matt Chernoff
A.K.A.:
"The Bookie"
From: Atlanta
Age: 28 years
Been in Radio: 5 years
Heard On: 790 The Zone, "Southern Comfort"
COLLEGE RADIO… OR NOT: An alumnus
of Georgia State University, which boasts the largest
college radio station in the country, you'd think radio
personality Chernoff would've made a pit stop or two.
"Nope," he says. "I worked a couple small
AM stations, but never 88.5"
WHY RADIO?: "It was just something,"
shrugs Chernoff. "I figured it was better than a
real job." He winks, then slouches some more to hide
his imposing height.
THE SECRET OF HIS SUCCESS: "They
figured I was cheap enough to keep," says Chernoff.
"My philosophy was work cheap and work a lot."
It's paid dividends, but don't expect it to last. "It's
changed now though," he adds as his boss Shapiro
walks by.
SAY IT LOUD, I'M JEWISH AND I'M…:
"I'm Jewish, and I'm proud, but it's not a big deal,"
says Chernoff. "That's a perfect way to put it."
GULLIBLE IS A RADIO TERM: "We did
an, 'If you know somebody famous call us' bit once,"
recalls Chernoff. "So we end up interviewing James
Taylor for 16 minutes until we realized at minute 16 that
it wasn't really James Tayler." Oops. "How am
I supposed to know what James Taylor sounds like?"
