The
Jewish Radio Mafia: Holly Firfer
A.K.A.:
"Blondie"
From: Glenview, Illinois (just outside
Chicago)
Age: 38 years
Been in Radio: 9 months (15 years at
CNN)
Heard On: 92.9 Dave FM, "All Access with
Barnes & Firfer"
WE TRIED THAT TOO: Fresh out of college,
Firfer wanted to produce long-form documentaries. "I
couldn't see why, at 22, nobody wanted to give me $2 million
dollars to go and tell you the plight of the Somalians."
Tough luck — she landed a gig at CNN instead.
YOU SHOULD WATCH WHAT YOU EAT: "I
almost died in Jamaica." Say what? While doing a
food segment for CNN, "I ate ackee for this show.
It's poisonous if it's not ripe, and we had no idea. That
was one of my craziest moments in broadcasting."
FUNNY, YOU DON’T LOOK IT: "Being
Jewish is a very important thing," says Firfer. To
prove it she has two Jewish parents intent on getting
her married. "I'm blonde and I'm named Holly, so
people don't believe it. They go, 'No way! You're not
Jewish.'" It's OK. We'll vouch for you.
ON JUMPING FROM CNN TO RADIO: It's all
Jimmy's fault. "Jimmy [Baron] called me and asked
me to fill in for Leslie," says Firfer about her
start in radio. "After Barnes jumped to Dave FM,
he called me up and wanted to work with me."
